Liverpool waiting for update on Alisson absence as they consider short-term signing

The Reds saw their Brazil international goalkeeper pick up an unfortunate injury during a Premier League opener against Norwich on Friday

Liverpool are still waiting on a diagnosis of the injury picked up by Alisson during a 4-1 win over Norwich, with the Reds considering a move to bring in another goalkeeper.

Jurgen Klopp saw his first-choice shot-stopper pick up an unfortunate knock just 39 minutes into the new season.

Alisson broke down when preparing to take a goal kick, with the Brazil international crumpling to the turf.

Klopp told reporters after a big win at Anfield that was overshadowed by an untimely knock: “He thought something hit him, so that’s not a good sign. He thought that but that’s not what happened, sportsmen will know what I mean.

“It obviously shows it’s more than just a strain. We don’t know exactly but it doesn’t look too good.”

It was initially suggested that Alisson had picked up an Achilles problem.

Liverpool now believe that the issue is with the South American’s calf, but they are yet to receive a full medical report.

Alisson underwent tests on Friday evening and again on Saturday morning.

Once the full extent of the ailment has been determined, then a timescale can be put on his recovery.

As things stand, the Reds are hoping that his absence will be a matter of weeks rather than months.

There is optimism on Merseyside that the injury is not as bad as first feared.

Klopp will certainly be keen to get Alisson back at his disposal as quickly as possible, with the 26-year-old a big part of his plans.

He has been a revelation since arriving in English football during the summer of 2018, with the Premier League Golden Glove captured in his debut campaign.

Alisson has nailed down the No.1 spot at Anfield, with Liverpool agreeing to part with Simon Mignolet during the most recent transfer window as a result.

Former West Ham custodian Adrian was snapped up to fill that void and he has been thrust straight into the first team after seeing a rival laid low.

With Klopp suddenly short on options in a key area, it is possible that a move will be made to bring in another keeper as a free agent.

Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Caiomhin Kelleher is due to return to training this week after shaking off a wrist complaint, but a more experienced performer may still be sought.
