The Red Devils won 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Monday night and are now just three points behind Frank Lampard’s men in the Champions League race
Manchester United moved to within three points of the Premier League’s top four after a controversial 2-0 win at Chelsea, prompting bet365 to cut them to 4/1 (5.0) to guarantee a Champions League place.
The Red Devils were 8/1 (9.0) before the game on Monday but goals from Anthony Martial and Harry Maguire – who was lucky to avoid a red card for kicking out at Michy Batshuayi earlier on – sealed victory against a Blues side that had two goals ruled out by VAR.
Although fourth is currently not the cut-off for a place in next season’s Champions League due to UEFA banning Manchester City for the next two editions, United will not want to take any chances that the ruling gets overturned.
Seven of their remaining 12 games are against teams in the bottom half, with four of those at Old Trafford, and so Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will fancy his chances of a top-four finish – especially given how tight the race is.
Chelsea currently occupy fourth with 41 points and defeat on Monday means they are now just one point ahead of Tottenham in fifth and only five points above ninth-placed Everton.
Despite that, bet365 still make Frank Lampard’s men 10/11 (1.91) to finish in the top four but their tally of just 15 points from the last possible 42 will be worrying to Blues fans.
Things are unlikely to get much easier here on out, either, with Chelsea still yet to face Liverpool, Man City and Tottenham this term.
Spurs’ recent uptick in form has seen them string together three consecutive league wins for the first time in over a year and they are 9/4 (3.25) for a top-four place.
However, detractors will point to the season-ending injuries of Harry Kane and Heung-min Son, as well as a host of tricky remaining fixtures, as reasons to oppose the north London side.
Seven of the remaining 12 fixtures for Jose Mourinho’s side are against fellow top-half clubs with Man Utd, Everton and Arsenal all set to visit Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the space of six weeks.
Sixth-place Sheffield United have been the surprise package this season with 39 points and are 14/1 (15.0) to secure what would be an incredible top-four finish.
Wolves, just three points behind Chris Wilder’s men, may also attract interest at the same price whilst Arsenal are out at 25/1 (26.0) and a resurgent Everton 40/1 (41.0).
