Gaspar joins the IMF


Vítor Gaspar has been appointed director of the International Monetary Fund’s department of fiscal affairs.

Gaspar was once head of research at the European Central Bank, then became head of the European Commission’s in-house think-tank, the Bureau of European Policy Advisers, before appointment as Portugal’s finance minister in 2011. He resigned from the Portuguese government in 2013 in the face of opposition to proposed austerity measures.
