Jones, Schulz and Erckenbrack Win Titles at Dragon Open

MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team crowned three individual champions on Saturday at the Dragon Open at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse. Sophomore Cole Jones won the title at 125 pounds, redshirt freshman Mason Schulz won the championship at 141 pounds and sophomore Sam Erckenbrack won the championship at 285-pounds to lead the Dragons on the day.

“Overall I was very happy with how the guys performed this weekend,” MSUM head coach Kris Nelson said. “The overall effort of our entire team was good. We put six wrestlers in the finals with Cole Jones, Mason Schulz and Sam Erckenbrack winning titles.”

Jones started his day receiving a bye before winning his semifinal match via major decision over Minot State’s Oscar Nellis, 11-2. He beat another Minot State wrestler, Dean Arevalo, 5-3 in the championship.

Schulz picked up three wins on the day, starting with a tech fall over St. John’s Anthony Hennen. His semifinal match resulted in a major decision win over St. Cloud State’s Ryan Rodrigo. He won his championship match via fall over NDSU’s Sawyer Degen to win the championship.

Erckenbrack started his day with a win via fall over Chumkaur Dhaliwal of Jamestown before winning his semifinal match 5-3 over Jordan WIll of Minot State. He took home a 3-1 decision over NSIC rival Dominic Tudor from the University of Mary.

Junior Seth Hutchison was one of three Dragons to take second place on the day, falling in his championship match 8-2 to St. John’s Noah Becker. At 157-pounds Braydon Ortloff took second after losing a 6-1 decision in the championship. Evan Foster also took second at the 184-pound weight class, dropping his championship match to Tyree Overton of St. Cloud State.

Other Dragons who placed in the upper division include Mitchell Kotschevar, who took third at 184-pounds and Logan Rhode, who took sixth place at 197-pounds.

The Dragons will be back in action on Thursday night when they host Division III powerhouse Augsburg at 7 p.m. in Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
